The concept behind the Luna Fertility Indicator has been in use in Europe for some time and has been extensively tested as to its safety and accuracy. Quite simply, a woman's body fluids reflect the changes in hormone levels during different phases of the fertility cycle. When the dried fluids are viewed through a powerful magnifier they reveal the stage of the cycle through the patterns in the crystals. This completely natural phenomenon shows that saliva crystallizes in the same special way as uterine cervical mucus, due to the action of the estrogens, presenting the appearance of fern-like branches. Dr. Ridborg first discovered physiological variations in the crystallized arrangement of saliva (or cervical uterine mucus) related to ovulation in 1948. Later, this scientific discovery was introduced as a regulator of female fertility by Doctors E. and J. Billings. Luna takes up slightly more space than a lipstick and can be used any private place with access to natural or clear light. Simply place a sample of your saliva on the clean slide, allow it to dry (about 10 minutes) then hold it up to the light. The crystal patterns will reveal whether or not you are fertile at this time. Every woman is unique as well as every cycle so time must be taken to understand your individual fertility patterns. You will be begin to see these patterns form:
Infertile Pattern (N)
A simple dot-like pattern (varying in size and quantity and may even connect into globular structures) will show most days during your cycle.
Pre-Ovulatory Patterns (P)
Background lines will begin to appear behind the simple dot-like structures that were not present in the infertile pattern, signaling the commencement of the pre-ovulatory phase (usually start to appear 6 days before your ovulation day). You must be sure to focus the lens eyepiece through its entire range to be sure correct viewing of the early stages. The background lines may proceed to cover the entire slide or around the edges with the dot-like pattern in the foreground and may tend to be larger in size. Careful focusing will often show fern-like patterns beginning to appear 2 _3 days prior to your ovulation. Note: Any crystallization shows that you are fertile and can get pregnant and this coincides with the cervical fluid changing to a thicker whitish consistency. This cervical fluid can be used to corroborate your fertility by performing the same steps as performed for the saliva test. (See instructions marked "cervical fluid testing").
Ovulatory Patterns (F)
Almost complete crystallization (ferning) will appear on the slide on the day of ovulation; your most fertile day of the cycle. It is suggested that you mark your readings on the monthly trackingchart (using the symbols following each reading as shown in brackets above), because every woman is unique and different and you should familiarize yourself with your own crystallization patterns. Post-Ovulatory Pattern (P) After your day of ovulation, similar patterns as viewed in Pre-Ovulatory patterns will be noticed. Any show of crystallization indicates a fertile phase and pregnancy can occur.
After using the LFI, simply rinse off the slide and put away until the next use. Upon repeated in-home testing, you can track your complete fertility cycle without the nuisance of urine tests, temperature tests or costly visits to a fertility or health care service. It is totally private, non-invasive and chemical free.

Is the LFI accurate?
When used and interpreted correctly, the LFI is 97% effective for determining the time of ovulation. By charting your patterns daily and using the fertility cycle chart included, you can ensure the reliability of the system.
Is it expensive?
No. The LFI is completely reusable for up to ten years and comes with a spare slide and viewfinder. There are no additional costs for supplies. It is a one-time purchase.
Are there any side effects?
No. Unlike chemical birth control devices, the LFI is completely natural and does not interfere with the body's natural processes.
"I don't think I have a regular cycle, can I still use the LFI"
Yes. In fact before you set up anappointment with a fertility specialist you can use the LFI to determine what your cycle looks like. Fertility cycles average 28 days, but can range from 23 to 40 days. Ovulation can even occur twice in the same cycle. By using the LFI every morning and plotting the results on the fertility chart, you will know exactly what stage you are at. You can use these results to aid your doctor and determine any irregularities in your cycle.
What is the best time to use the LFI?
For best results, you should use the LFI first thing in the morning prior to brushing your teeth or drinking juice, etc. Do not consume any water, alcohol, sugars, food or cigarettes for at least 2 hours prior to taking the test. Your test results will be affected causing false positives.
I am currently on the birth control pill, can I use the LFI?
No. You can use the LFI in conjunction with barrier methods of birth control, however, the LFI cannot be used properly with any hormonal methods of birth control, i.e. The pill, Norplant, etc. You may wish to wait until you have had two normal periods before starting to use the LFI.
What could interfere with my test result?
If you are actually pregnant, have recently been pregnant, or have reached menopause, you may get a misleading result. Some prescription drugs may affect the result you see. Please consult your physician to determine what affect these drugs may have.
I have used the LFI for three months and I am still not pregnant?
It is important to remember that it can take a normal, healthy couple many months to become pregnant. There are many factors that affect your ability to become pregnant even if you have been able to have intercourse during your most fertile time. If after several months you have no success, consult your physician. Since you have been monitoring your cycle with the LFI, you will be able to give your doctor a clear picture of your fertility cycle.
When can I start to use the LFI?
You can start to use the LFI at any time in your cycle.
Does the LFI protect against sexually transmissible diseases or AIDS?
No. The LFI does not protect you from any sexually transmitted diseases or the HIV virus.
Can the LFI be used with animals?
The Luna Fertility Indicator is based on the hormone/saliva phenomenon and applies to all warm-blooded mammals. Professional animal breeders can use this device to confirm the ovulation of animals such as horses and dogs.

I have been thrilled with ZooScape and the Luna Kit. After taking 3 months to learn my ovulation thanks to the kit, my husband and I used the kit as our birth control for over a year(even though not its intended usage).
