Description
General Herb Information *Note: The following monograph relates to the White Cedar (Thuja occidentalis) and not the homeopathic preparation, specifically.
White Cedar Thuja occidentalis L.
Family: Cupressaceae.
Other Names: American arbor-vitae; thuya d'occident, thuya américain (French); Abendaindischer Lebensbaum (German); thuja (Italian).
Description: Arbor-vitae is an evergreen tree of up to 20 m in height, with flattened branches bearing scale-like leaves, inconspicuous male cones and small oblong female cones with overlapping cone scales.
Origin: Eastern parts of North America. The tree produces a useful, soft, fragrant timber and is commonly cultivated in gardens (variegated forms, known as "golden cypress", and dwarf forms are popular).
Parts Used: Leaves (actually the young, flattened branches - Thujae summitates) or the essential oil (Thujae aetheroleum).
Therapeutic Category: Traditional diuretic, expectorant; immune stimulant.
Uses and Properties: Extracts are used to treat fever, colds, headache, rheumatism, bronchitis and cystitis. It is considered to be an effective decongestant and expectorant. The fresh young twigs are popular in homoeopathy to formulate products against warts, skin rashes, rheumatism and the common cold. Thuja or thuja oil is traditionally used to induce abortion - sometimes with fatal results.
Preparation and Dosage: Infusions are rarely used because the dosage should be determined accurately. Alcoholic extracts are usually preferred (used in commercial preparations). The oil or extracts may rubbed into the skin as a counter-irritant to treat rheumatic pain, warts, stiff muscles and skin infections, rashes and neuralgia.
Active Ingredients: Volatile oil (0.4-1%); the main compound is thujone (both alpha-thujone and beta-thujone, up to 65% of the total oil), together with alpha-pinene, camphor, borneol and fenchone. Also present are sesquiterpenes, flavonoids and polysaccharides.
Pharmacological Effects: Thujone is known to be neurotoxic so the internal use is not recommended. Ingestion over a long period may be particularly harmful due to cumulative effects. A tincture was successful in treating warts an epitheliomes. The water-soluble polysaccharide fraction shows immune stimulant properties. A combination of Echinacea, Thuja, and Baptisia tinctoria is used in phytotherapy as an immune stimulant (Esberitox)
Notes: The essential oil is used commercially in disinfectants, hair cosmetics, liquid soaps, insecticides and deodorants. Powdered leaves are said to kill flies and ticks.
Status: Traditional medicine; Pharm.
Spicy thuja leaves affect the lymph, spleen, and lungs with diuretic, insecticidal, anthelmintic, antiviral, expectorant, emmenagogic, stimulant, and anticarcinogenic properties. These pharmacological actions make the herb useful for treating warts, bronchial catarrh, lymphatic congestion, clearing intestinal parasites, stopped menstruation, cystitis, and cancer. The major component in thuja is thujone, but the herb also contains terpenic ketones, tannin, wax, sugars, bitter principle, thujic acid, and thujin.
An infusion can be used as an expectorant for bronchial catarrh. It is also effective as a diuretic for cystitis and amenorrhea. One of its unique virtues is as a topical and internal treatment for warts. According to herbalist Donny Yance, thuja is particularly indicated for cancers of viral origin, including colo-rectal cancer, uterine cancer, and breast and lung cancer. It enhances the immune system by stimulating T-lymphocytes and increasing interleukin-2 production. This makes it particularly useful for increasing tolerance of chemo- and radiotherapy.

Directions
Select the remedy that most closely matches the symptoms. In conditions where self-treatment is appropriate, unless otherwise directed by a physician, a lower potency (6X, 6C, 12X, 12C, 30X, or 30C) should be used. In addition, instructions for use are usually printed on the label.
Many homeopathic physicians suggest that remedies be used as follows: Take one dose and wait for a response. If improvement is seen, continue to wait and let the remedy work. If improvement lags significantly or has clearly stopped, another dose may be taken. The frequency of dosage varies with the condition and the individual. Sometimes a dose may be required several times an hour; other times a dose may be indicated several times a day; and in some situations, one dose per day (or less) can be sufficient.
If no response is seen within a reasonable amount of time, select a different remedy.
Take 3 pellets 3 times a day.
Homeopathic medicines are safe and remarkably free from side effects. Your condition, however may require special care, so please observe the following: Do not take this product for pain for more than 10 days(adults) or 5 days(children) unless directed by a doctor. If pain gets worse, if new symptoms occur, or if redness or swelling is present, consult a doctor because these could be signs of a serious condition. As with any drug, if you are pregnant or nursing a baby, seek the advice of a health professional before using this product. Warning--Keep out of the reach of children.

Cautions
In order to maintain the potency and freshness of these products, it is very important to store them properly. They need protection against light, high temperatures and humidity, and, after use, are best stored in a small kit or bag.
Avoid opening a tube or any other container of homeopathic medication in a room where perfumes or strong odors are present. And, needless to say, keep them away from any cigarette smoke.
Caution when using herb: Thujone is toxic in large doses, so this herb should be taken only in small prescribed doses.
Additional Information
Homeopathy is a medical system based on the belief that illness can be cured by taking a minute dose of a substance that, if taken by a healthy person, would produce symptoms like those being treated. Homeopathy employs a variety of plant, animal, and mineral substances in very small doses to stimulate the body's natural healing powers and to bring the body back into balance.

I started to use Thuja for a cancerous tumor that my ferret has. It seemed to shrink it slightly for a few days, then after that the tumor got a little bigger. I tried repeated doses, but didn't work. I ended up using Prednisone from my veterinarian to help with shrinkage. I was very disappointed the Thuja didn't work - it was recommended by different books for pets and homeopathy.

thuja for warts!
I've used the tablet form to cure plantars warts-it worked beautifully! My clients w/ plantars warts have tried the liquid version, and it also worked...no scars, no side effects, no pain. It seems to take around 4-6 weeks provided you use it consistantly and regularly.

the truth is a treasure
I had battled with plantars warts for years and they got increasingly worse. I finally tried thuja. I went through two little jars before finally giving up because I thought nothing was happening. Then about a week later I noticed that they were all pretty much gone. After one more jar I'm cured!
