General Herb Information

Wormseed
Chenopdium ambrosioides L. var. anthelminticum (L.) A. Gray.

Family: Chenopodiaceae.

Other Names: Goosefoot; chénopode anthelmintique (French); Wurmtreibender Gänsefub (German); chenopodio (Italian); quenopodio (Spanish).

Description: Wormseed goosefoot is a weedy annual or perennial herb of up to 1 m in height with oblong leaves and inconspicuous flowers. The medicinal plant was previously known as C. anthelminticum but it is now considered to be merely a variety of C. ambrosioides. The variety ambrosioides (Chenopodii herba) also contains ascaridol and has been used in a similar way as the variety anthelminticum.

Origin: South and Central America (especially Mexico). Cultivated throughout temperate and tropical America.

Parts Used: Mainly the essential oil (Chenopodii aetheroleum). 1 g oil dissolved in castor oil (2.5% solution) has the best anthelmintic effect.

Therapeutic Category: Anthelmintic.

Uses and Properties: The plant and its essential oil have a long history of use to treat intestinal parasites, particularly ascaris (maw worm) and hookworm in adults and children. Wormseed appears to have been used against snake bite, stomach ache and as a tonic; externally against ectoparasites.

Preparation and Dosage: The essential oil was once very popular as vermifuge but it is nowadays rarely used. Since it is known to be quite toxic, the dose should be carefully controlled. For children, as many drops of the oil as they are old are given orally, up to a maximum of 10 drops. The adult dose is typically 8 drops every three hours (repeated up to three times), with a maximum daily dose of 1 g.

Active Ingredients: The plant contains up to 0.6% essential oil, of which ascaridol comprises 45-70%. Also present are p-cymol (20-40%), alpha-terpinene, limonene and camphor.

Pharmacological Effects: Ascaridol is a known anthelmintic agent that immobilises and kills parasites. In veterinary medicine it is used to treat infections by trematodes.

Note: Jesuits introduced the dried herb to Europe in the 18th century. Since then the so-called Tinctura botryos mexicanae or "Jesuit tea" has been used for abortion. Several other species of Chenopodium are utilised in medicine, as green vegetables or grains.

Status: Traditional medicine.

Directions

Select the remedy that most closely matches the symptoms. In conditions where self-treatment is appropriate, unless otherwise directed by a physician, a lower potency (6X, 6C, 12X, 12C, 30X, or 30C) should be used. In addition, instructions for use are usually printed on the label.

Many homeopathic physicians suggest that remedies be used as follows: Take one dose and wait for a response. If improvement is seen, continue to wait and let the remedy work. If improvement lags significantly or has clearly stopped, another dose may be taken. The frequency of dosage varies with the condition and the individual. Sometimes a dose may be required several times an hour; other times a dose may be indicated several times a day; and in some situations, one dose per day (or less) can be sufficient.

If no response is seen within a reasonable amount of time, select a different remedy.

Take 3 pellets, 3 times a day, for a total of 9 pellets a day.

Homeopathic medicines are safe and remarkably free from side effects. Your condition, however may require special care, so please observe the following: Do not take this product for pain for more than 10 days(adults) or 5 days(children) unless directed by a doctor. If pain gets worse, if new symptoms occur, or if redness or swelling is present, consult a doctor because these could be signs of a serious condition. As with any drug, if you are pregnant or nursing a baby, seek the advice of a health professional before using this product. Warning--Keep out of the reach of children.

Sublingual medication. Place under tongue; let dissolve. Take when mouth is in natural condition, 1/2 hour before or after eating, brushing teeth, or drinking anything but water.

Cautions

In order to maintain the potency and freshness of these products, it is very important to store them properly. They need protection against light, high temperatures and humidity, and, after use, are best stored in a small kit or bag.

Avoid opening a tube or any other container of homeopathic medication in a room where perfumes or strong odors are present. And, needless to say, keep them away from any cigarette smoke.

Warning: Both the plant and the essential oil are poisonous to humans. Symptoms: ringing in the ears, spasms and coma.

*Note: This warning does not apply to homeopathic wormseed preparations since the trace quantities of toxic substances within homeopathics operate on an energy level in a somewhat vaccine-like fashion. In fact, most homeopathic preparations include substances that would be extremely harmful in herbal dosages. The underlying principal states that the very symptoms that a substance causes (in herbal or medicinal dosages) are the very symptoms they eliminate (in homeopathic dilutions). This is known as the "Law of Similars".

Additional Information

Homeopathy is a medical system based on the belief that illness can be cured by taking a minute dose of a substance that, if taken by a healthy person, would produce symptoms like those being treated. Homeopathy employs a variety of plant, animal, and mineral substances in very small doses to stimulate the body's natural healing powers and to bring the body back into balance.
