The property common to all varieties of this species is their vomitive effect. One of them, very common in Brazil and Matto-Grosso, contains a lot of starch. In the nineteenth century an alkaloid, emetine, and a tannin, ipecacuanhic acid were discovered in Ipecacuanha.
Ipecacuanha powder is highly irritant: applied to the skin or to a mucous membrane, it causes blistering inflammation with pus formation; as a powder, it is irritant to the eyes and causes choking. It is above all used as a vomitive, the dose being 1.5 to 2 grams. Mechanical stimulation of the stomach can be carried over into the intestine and thus have a purging effect.
Small diluted doses, given the effect of the emetine they contain, reduce the number and intensity of the heartbeats, lower the temperature, diminish sensitivity and paralyse the fibres of the vascular coverings: hence, the effectiveness of ipecacuanha in treating hemorrhages and dysentery.

Select the remedy that most closely matches the symptoms. In conditions where self-treatment is appropriate, unless otherwise directed by a physician, a lower potency (6X, 6C, 12X, 12C, 30X, or 30C) should be used. In addition, instructions for use are usually printed on the label.
Many homeopathic physicians suggest that remedies be used as follows: Take one dose and wait for a response. If improvement is seen, continue to wait and let the remedy work. Cautions
In order to maintain the potency and freshness of these products, it is very important to store them properly. They need protection against light, high temperatures and humidity, and, after use, are best stored in a small kit or bag.
Avoid opening a tube or any other container of homeopathic medication in a room where perfumes or strong odors are present. And, needless to say, keep them away from any cigarette smoke.
