Description

General Herb Information
*Note: This information applies to the aconitum napellus herb, not the homeopathic preparation.

A poison to which there is no known antidote: can there be any more daunting statement? Can there be any justification for growing a plant to which it applies? Yet this is monkshood, an ornament of cottage gardens since they were in existence, with its tall, imposing spikes of clear blue-hooded flowers towering up beside the currant bushes in summer and autumn.

This potentially lethal herb seems not to have been brought into medicinal use, at least in Britain, until the mid-eighteenth century, when its sedative and pain-killing powers were recognized. Danger of over-dosing was always present and its use declined to "apply externally only to the affected spot" for sciatica and so on. That it is clearly not to be trifled with is emphasized by common names such as wolfsbane (for Aconitum vulparia, a bait-poison) and the knowledge that in ancient times it was an effective arrow-poison in eastern Asia.

However, none of this detracts from its beauty. Aconitum napellus itself, though fine enough (especially in cool northern gardens in its pink form "Carneum"), is also the parent with other species of further good garden plants. These are grouped under the name of A x bicolor. They give a range of colours from white to thunder-purple and, just as important, a range of heights from 3 to 6 feet. Different in effect is wolfsbane, for here the narrow hooded flowers are pale horn-yellow.

All monkshoods have elegant divided foliage clothing the stems. Though not flowering until mid or late summer the first leaves push through the still chilly soil in late February. This is the only moment when these true aconites have any visual connection with winter acomte - that tiny golden chalice abave its choir-boy ruff of green.

Medicinal Usage for Aconitum Napellus Homeopathic Preparations

Alcohol withdrawal support

If the person is very fearful while going through a withdrawal period, this remedy may be indicated. Intense palpitations may occur, which can make the person even more frightened and anxious.

Anxiety

A panic attack that comes on suddenly with very strong fear (even fear of death) may indicate this remedy. A state of immense anxiety may be accompanied by strong palpitations, shortness of breath, and flushing of the face. Sometimes a shaking experience will be the underlying cause. Strong feelings of anxiety may also occur when a person is just beginning to come down with a flu or cold.

Bell's palsy

When one side of a person's face becomes paralyzed, especially after being exposed to wind or cold air, this remedy may be helpful. A feeling of fear and agitation and a sudden onset of symptoms are strong indications for Aconitum napellus.

Common cold

This remedy can be indicated in the early stages of a cold, if symptoms are intense and come on suddenly. Exposure to cold and wind, or a stressful or traumatic experience may precipitate the illness. Symptoms include a dry stuffy nose with a hot thin discharge, tension in the chest, a scratchy throat, and choking cough. The person often feels thirsty, chilly, anxious, and agitated.

Cough

This remedy is indicated when a cough has come on suddenly - often from exposure to cold wind, or after a traumatic experience. The cough is likely to be sharp, short, dry, and constant. It may begin during sleep and wake the person up, or can start when the person goes from a cool place into a warmer one. Restlessness and fear are typical when this remedy is needed. It is often used in early stages of croup and asthma.

Ear infections

This remedy is indicated if an earache comes on suddenly with cutting, throbbing pain - often after exposure to cold and wind, or after a shaking experience. The person usually is fearful, agitated, and restless. Fever may be high and thirst is strong. Symptoms are often worse near midnight, and can even wake the person up.

Eye strain or eye injuries

This remedy may bring relief when foreign matter gets into the eye and causes irritation. The person feels fearful and agitated - with eye pain, heavy watering, and heightened sensitivity to light.

Infection

This remedy is often indicated when fever and inflammation come on suddenly, sometimes after exposure to wind and cold, or after a traumatic experience. The person may be very thirsty and often feels fearful or anxious.

Influenza

A flu that comes on suddenly and intensely - with fever, anxiety, constricted pupils, and strong thirst - is likely to respond to this remedy. The person may feel fearful or agitated, and the fever can alternate with chills. Symptoms are often worst around midnight. Exposure to cold wind or a shock of some kind often precedes the illness.

Injuries

This remedy can be helpful when a person feels extremely fearful or agitated after being injured. It may help to soothe anxiety and panic and reduce the chance of shock.

Insect bites and stings

This remedy can be helpful if a person feels fearful or panicked after being stung. Cutting, stabbing, or burning pain may be felt, along with swelling, tingling, or numbness. Aconitum should be used immediately, while symptoms are intense, and can be followed by another remedy, as indicated.

Measles

Sudden high fever with hot dry skin, pain in the eyes, strong thirst, and a fearful or panicky feeling are indications for this remedy. Symptoms often start near midnight, and may wake the person up.

Mumps

This remedy may be indicated in mumps if the fever comes on suddenly and the person is very agitated. Stabbing or tingling pain can be felt in the jaw or face. The person feels worse from warmth and better from fresh air, and is often very thirsty.

Osteoarthritis

This remedy may be helpful for pain and inflammation that comes on suddenly after exposure to cold wind and weather. The person is likely to feel fearful, panicked, or agitated.

Photosensitivity

If a rash breaks out suddenly and the person feels extremely anxious and apprehensive, this remedy may be indicated. Exposure to sunlight, or being out on a cold dry windy day, may precipitate symptoms. The rash may feel numb or itch, and stimulants may reduce the itching.

Restless legs syndrome

If a person with restless leg syndrome is very anxious and tends to panic, this remedy may be soothing. Tingling or shooting pains are felt in the legs, and the nervous system is very agitated. The person may be unable to relax and fall asleep - or the sleep is distressing and full of fearful dreams.

Sleeplessness

This remedy can be helpful if a person panics with insomnia. Fear and agitation come on suddenly when the person is drifting off to sleep, or may even wake a sleeping person up.

Surgery and recovery support

This remedy is indicated when people anticipating surgery are extremely agitated or panicked, especially if they fear that they will die. Easy startling, a sensitivity to light and noise, dry mouth, and thirst are other indications for Aconitum.

Teething

If teething is very painful, and the baby seems agitated or fearful, this remedy can often bring relief. The baby's face may be flushed, the gums may look inflamed, and sleep can be very restless.

Urinary tract infections

This remedy is often useful when a person feels anxious both before and during urination, with hot, scanty urine, and a burning or spasmodic feeling in the outlet of the bladder. It can also be helpful if retention of urine occurs after a person has been very cold and chilled, or after a shaking experience.

Directions

Select the remedy that most closely matches the symptoms. In conditions where self-treatment is appropriate, unless otherwise directed by a physician, a lower potency (6X, 6C, 12X, 12C, 30X, or 30C) should be used. In addition, instructions for use are usually printed on the label.

Many homeopathic physicians suggest that remedies be used as follows: Take one dose and wait for a response. If improvement is seen, continue to wait and let the remedy work. If improvement lags significantly or has clearly stopped, another dose may be taken. The frequency of dosage varies with the condition and the individual. Sometimes a dose may be required several times an hour; other times a dose may be indicated several times a day; and in some situations, one dose per day (or less) can be sufficient.

If no response is seen within a reasonable amount of time, select a different remedy.

Take 3 pellets 3 times a day.

Homeopathic medicines are safe and remarkably free from side effects. Your condition, however may require special care, so please observe the following: Do not take this product for pain for more than 10 days(adults) or 5 days(children) unless directed by a doctor. If pain gets worse, if new symptoms occur, or if redness or swelling is present, consult a doctor because these could be signs of a serious condition. As with any drug, if you are pregnant or nursing a baby, seek the advice of a health professional before using this product. Warning--Keep out of the reach of children.

Sublingual medication. Place under tongue; let dissolve. Take when mouth is in natural condition, 1/2 hour before or after eating, brushing teeth, or drinking anything but water.

Cautions

Only use Aconitum Napellus under the supervision of an accredited professional. Aconitum Napellus can be poisonous at high dosages.

In order to maintain the potency and freshness of these products, it is very important to store them properly. They need protection against light, high temperatures and humidity, and, after use, are best stored in a small kit or bag.

Avoid opening a tube or any other container of homeopathic medication in a room where perfumes or strong odors are present. And, needless to say, keep them away from any cigarette smoke.

Additional Information

Homeopathy is a medical system based on the belief that illness can be cured by taking a minute dose of a substance that, if taken by a healthy person, would produce symptoms like those being treated. Homeopathy employs a variety of plant, animal, and mineral substances in very small doses to stimulate the body's natural healing powers and to bring the body back into balance.
