General Herb Information
There are two types of hemp used in medicine: Cannabis sativa and Cannabis indica, the properties of which are much more active. Hemp contains a resinous matter, cannabin, a blueish-green substance of nauseous odor and bitter persistent taste, insoluble in water but soluble cold in alcohol, ether and hydrocarbides. Hashish is the best known product of Indian Hemp, its remarkable hallucinatory properties do not require description. The most used pharmaceutical preparations are tincture of Cannabis indica and hemp extract.
The effects of hemp on the organism is already quite appreciable, when crossing a hemp field in summer at the height of the day it generally produces an intense headache, dizziness, giddiness and a special psychic state. Cannabis indica tincture is a poison to the brain. Indian Hemp mixed with ordinary tobacco is used to treat asthma, in some cases hemorrages or even, so it is said, tetanus.
Indian Hemp (Indian Physic)
Any hardy plant with a prefix 'Indian' is likely to need a pre-prefix of "Red" to indicate its North American origin. This plant was introduced to the early settlers and the Shakers employed it for fevers, pneumonia and dropsy: certainly it acts as a powerful heart stimulant. But, as with most of its family, it is also highly poisonous.
Nonetheless Indian physic is an elegant perennial up to 5-feet high with diffuse heads of little white flowers followed by striking seed pods which hang down in pairs like inflated tweezers. An interesting addition to any collection of medicinal or economic plants - the alternative name of Indian hemp refers to its stem fibres being used to fabricate ropes and twine.
Grown from seed (more likely to be available than plants) it will reach flowering size in two years. It has an invasive root.
