Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) is a naturally occurring free fatty acid that is important for cell membrane structure and cell communications. Scientists from the University of Wisconsin have recently discovered that CLA can significantly reduce body fat; while increasing lean muscle mass. CLA partitions the way the body stores and uses energy; switching calories to healthy muscle tissue. This allows the body to perform more efficiently. CLA has also shown promising results in reducing the risk of developing skin cancer, breast cancer and coronary heart disease. It is also a potent antioxidant. Natural sources of CLA include red meat and dairy foods. Modern agricultural practices and changing diets have diminished the average daily intake of CLA by as much as 80% over the past 20 years. It is difficult and impractical to consume optimal amounts of this micronutrient from modern food sources. CLA is formed by conjugating (joining together in pairs) linoleic acid that is derived from natural plant oils (ie. sunflower, safflower).
