Flax oil has shown positive results in the treatment of arthritis, psoriasis, eczema, high blood pressure, angina, strokes, coronary heart disease, multiple sclerosis, high blood cholesterol and cancer. This herb is the richest source of Alpha-linolenic acid (an Omega-3 fatty acid). It also contains essential Omega-6 fatty acids, beta-carotene, glycosides, mucilage, oleic acid, magnesium, zinc, potassium, protein, fiber, vitamin A, B-complex, and E. Milled flax seed offers, not only the health benefits of essential fatty acids in the oil, but also the benefits of flax fibre. The fibre in the flax seed acts as a laxative. Within the flax fibre are lignans, a phytochemical that bacteria convert to estrogen-like substances called enterodiol and enterolactone in the process of digestion. These phytoestrogens have anti-tumor effects. Lignans may also have antioxidant and cholesterol-lowering properties and may help to maintain bone density.
