The extract acts an antioxidant, improves liver function, stimulates regeneration of damaged liver cells, prevents the formation of damaging leukotrienes and protects the kidneys. It is also helpful for adrenal and inflammatory bowel disorders, adrenal disorders, weakened immune systems, psoriasis.
In general, 15 to 20 drops of the traditional 65 percent alcohol-based tinctures can be taken 2 to 3 times a day. For those needing a stronger remedy, tablets and capsules are available but the preferred form is achieved by combining milk thistle with phosphatidylcholine. A 100 mg dose of milk thistle bound in this way (standardized to contain 80 percent silymarin) taken three times daily is probably the strongest way to take this herb.

Milk thistle is remarkably free of toxic reactions. Even at high doses it is well tolerated with occasional loose stool noted.
