Description

Black Cohosh prefers the shady, rich soil of hardwood forests from Maine to Wisconsin, and south along the Appalachians to Georgia, and west to Missouri.

Rising three to eight feet, the spikes of the delicate, showy flowers are conspicuous as they tower over most of the understory plants of the early summer woods. The tall, spreading, compound leaf-stem is divided and subdivided into threes.

As attractive as the tall spike of flowers is to the eye, it is somewhat less attractive to the nose. Because of its peculiar smell, it has a reputation as an insect repellent which accounts for some of its names like bugbane and bugwort. In late fall and early winter the seed pods, still attached to dead stems, are full of hard, dry seeds. The rattling of the seeds in the pods as they are brushed or as the wind passes over them gives rise to the names rattleweed, rattletop, or rattle snakeroot.

The Algonquins called the root cuski, meaning 'rough', from the appearance of the rootstock. The white man supposedly twisted the word cuski into cohosh, prefixing it with 'black' because of the roots' dark color.

The rootstock is coarse, gnarled and irregular. The numerous scars and stumps on the upper surface are the remains of former leaf stems. When the root is fresh, the young, pale, slightly pinkish buds which are to furnish the next season's growth can be seen along the portion of the root that is the base of the present year's stem. The long, fleshy rootlets produced at the lower portion of the rootstock become very brittle upon drying. They are best gathered in the fall.
