Saw Palmetto is one of the best herbs available for prostate health and the treatment of benign prostatic hypertrophy as it can increase urine flow and decrease the frequency of nighttime urination. As such, it is most often recommended for this specific condition although it does offer other health benefits.
Saw palmetto is diuretic, sedative and tonic. It has the power of affecting the respiratory mucous membrane and is used for many complaints that are accompanied by chronic catarrh. In addition to its primary application to support prostate problems, this herb is useful for asthma and all kinds of throat troubles, colds, bronchitis, whooping cough and throat irritation. It is especially useful when there is excessive mucous discharge from the sinuses and nose and acts as an expectorant in these conditions.
While Saw Palmetto would be a good product choice to treat asthma, I would like to recommend that you consider Ivy. Traditional herbalists have used ivy for a wide number of complaints, including bronchitis, whooping cough, arthritis, rheumatism, and dysentery. While very few human clinical trials have been performed on ivy, a controlled trial in a group of children with bronchial asthma found that 25 drops of ivy leaf extract given twice per day was effective in improving airflow into the lungs after only three days of use. Ivy leaf is approved by the German Commission E for use against chronic inflammatory bronchial conditions and productive coughs due to its actions as an expectorant. One double-blind human trial found ivy leaf to be as effective as the drug ambroxol for treating the symptoms of chronic bronchitis.
Another product you may be interested in is Asthma Support by TerraVita. This is an herbal blend that is specifically designed to treat Asthma naturally and contains Stinging Nettle, Licorice, Scullcap and Acerola.
Stinging Nettle has been used for centuries to open up the passages of the lungs. Recent studies support the antihistamine effects of nettle leaf providing obvious benefits for those suffering from asthma.
Licorice is an expectorant and anti-inflammatory herb making it excellent for lung infections and conditions of the respiratory tract. It also has the ability to boost the positive effects of cortisone, a commonly prescribed asthma drug, while suppressing or delaying some of the negative side effects of cortisone.
The bioflavonoids present in scullcap are believed to be responsible for its anti-inflammatory properties, making it a useful addition to any herbal blend targeting asthma.
As many asthma sufferers tend to have lower-than-normal levels of vitamin C, we have rounded out our blend with the most abundant antioxidant present in the lining of the lungs (Acerola).
May reduce PSA (prostatic specific antigen) test levels. Seek professional medical advice for any irregularities in urinary patterns.
Toxicity: Detailed studies have shown saw palmetto extracts to be non-toxic.
