Description
Kava kava is a member of the pepper family but, unlike the other culinary peppers, it is grown for its roots rather than its berries. It has been used in parts of the Pacific at traditional social gatherings as a relaxant and in cultural and religious ceremonies. It is gaining popularity for its relaxing effects and as a pain reliever.
History
Kava kava is native to the Sandwich and Fiji lslands and is part of the social life of the Polynesian people. They make an intoxicating liquor from the rhizome root, which is known as Kava, Ava, and Kawa. The traditional method of making the beverage is to chew the root and strain the juice through coconut husks. Small doses are taken to stimulate the appetite, relieve pain, and relax spasms.
Characteristics
Piper methysticum is a tender tropical shrub growing up to 16 feet by 12 feet. It has reedlike, knotty branches. The broadly heart-shaped leaves have prominent veins and can be up to 8 inches across. The flowers are small and unisexual. The root can weigh several pounds.
Growing Tips
Peppers need a minimum temperature of 60°F. They like well-drained soil in shade and plenty of water. In hot countries they grow luxuriantly but in cooler ones they are grown much like tomatoes in a greenhouse. Propagation is by runners or cuttings. (There are legal restrictions in some countries.)
How to Use
Medicinally, kava kava is used to stimulate the nervous and circulatory systems. It is a good cure for insomnia and nervousness by enhancing restfulness. Kava kava also has the ability to reduce the pain associated with muscle spasm and arthritis, enhance mental awareness, and combat fatigue.
Adults: Take two capsules of dried herb (150 mg each) daily or use 15 to 20 drops of a tincture.
