The Wild Yam key constituents are diosgenin, saponins, tannins, catechins, indoles, glycosides and digopolysaccarides. Diosgenin (a steroidal glycoside) is partially converted in the intestines to the hormones DHEA, 6-ketodiosgenin and 9-ketodiosgenin . DHEA is known as the "mother of all hormones" among gerontologists. DHEA is known to decrease steadily with age and dramatically with child bearing and menopause.
Many degenerative conditions are associated with lower than average levels of DHEA. These conditions include cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, other memory disturbances, immune disorders including AIDS and chronic fatigue.
Other conditions include reduced immune response to viral and bacterial infections, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis and the conditions associated with aging.
