Description

Evening primrose oil is typically recommended to treat premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and associated symptoms such as breast pain and inflammation. It is an excellent source of GLA (gamma-linoleic acid in the omega-6 family of oils that actually has anti-inflammatory properties common to the omega-3 family) which is implicated in the production of anti-inflammatory, hormone-like substances called prostaglandins. Evening primrose oil is used primarly for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, although some advocates point to its nourishing effects on the skin, hair and nails. This makes the oil potentially useful as part of a treatment for certain skin disorders like eczema, for example. It is important to note that studies concerning GLA supplementation and eczema are contradictory: some have demonstrated that the anti-inflammatory effects of GLA on atopic dermatitis are effective; some have demonstrated that they are not.
