Description

The next time you feel a cold coming on, try Zinc & Echinacea Lozenges!

In a recent double blind clinical trial of 100 persons with colds, zinc citrate/gluconate lozenges shortened the duration of a cold by nearly half. The zinc citrate/gluconate group also reported significantly shorter duration of cough, headache, hoarseness, nasal congestion and drainage. Dr. Macknin, chair of the Clinic's department of General Pediatrics and senior investigator was surprised by the findings. He mentioned that this study was unique in that it measures the length of the cold rather than just severity of symptoms. He said: `The treatment patients were all getting better faster. The colds were gone.' Although he wasn't sure how zinc works, there are several mechanisms that could be responsible: in vitro zinc inhibits viral replication by preventing viral capsid proteins from forming; `zinc also has the capacity to bind with rhinovirus coat proteins and impair the virus' ability to 'dock' with respiratory epithelial cells;' zinc inhibits some prostaglandin metabolites that are responsible for inflammation; zinc can stimulate production of antiviral cytokine interferon. When zinc citrate/gluconate is enhanced with added vitamin C and Echinacea purpurea, two well-known immune stimulants, a cold doesn't have a chance.
