Description

Grape Vine
Vitis vinifera L.

Family: Vitaceae.

Other Names: Vigne (French); Weinrebe (German); vite (Italian).

Description: The grape vine is a woody climber with large, lobed leaves, coiled climbing tendrils, inconspicuous flowers and bunches of red or green berries.

Origin: The cultivated form is thought to be Mediterranean in origin, from where it was introduced to practically all temperate regions of the world.

Parts Used: Seeds (for extracts), very rarely the leaves.

Therapeutic Category: Antioxidant.

Uses and Properties: Grape seed is an important commercial source of so-called botanical-antioxidants (free-radical scavengers), that are taken to help the body resist diseases. Red grape leaves have been used to some extent in traditional medicine to treat diarrhoea, improve circulation and to help control bleeding. Wine, especially red wine, is considered to be healthy if taken in moderation.

Preparation and Dosage: Grape seed oil is used in relatively large doses. The extract is concentrated and standardised to contain 80-85% procyanidins. About 50 - 100 mg of such extracts (or equivalent quantities) are recommended as an effective daily dose.

Active Ingredients: The active ingredients in grape seed oil are nonhydrolysable or condensed tannins, better known by numerous other names (procyanidins, proanthocyanidins, leucoanthocyanidins, polyphenols or pycnogenols). Also of importance are the anthocyanins (mainly 3-glycosides of cyanidin and peonidin), organic acids, tannins and other phenolic compounds in red grapes and red wine.

Pharmacological Effects: Oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC) are antioxidants, free-radical scavengers and antimutagenics. Because of a large number of phenolic hydroxyl groups OPC can form multiple hydrogen bonds with proteins. OPC inhibit lipid peroxidase, the angiotensin converting enzyme - and specifically collagenase and other enzymes associated with capillary fragility. OPC are therefore useful as venotonics. Resveratrol and other phenolics are considered to be the beneficial (anti-arteriosclerotic) ingredients of red wine. Few clinical studies on OPC have focused on specific diseases.

Notes: Other commercial sources of OPC include green tea (Camellia), maritime pine bark (Pinus pinaster) and Crataegus.

Status: Traditional medicine.

Grape Seed extract is high in beneficial leucoanthocyanins, important bioflavonoids that protect the heart and promote healthy veins, arteries and capillaries. These bioflavonoids help to strengthen blood vessels, increase the tone and elasticity of capillary walls, enhance the effect of vitamin C, and help to quench free radicals. Webber Naturals Grape Seed Extract is an ideal choice to promote cardiovascular health.

Allergy sufferers may want to try Grape Seed extract because the leucoanthocyanins exert an inhibiting effect on histamine release, helpful for suppressing allergy symptoms.
