Studies have showed that people that used St. John's Wort have experienced natural mood elevation and reduced feelings of sadness or hopelessness and often experienced a better sleep pattern.
St. John's Wort Hypericum perforatum L.
Family: Clusiaceae or Hypericaceae.
Other Names: Millepertuis perfor‚ (French); Echtes Johanniskraut, Tpfel-Johanniskraut (German); iperico, erba di San Giovanni (Italian).
Description: A perennial herb or shrublet (up to 0.6 m), with small, gland-dotted leaves. Oil glands are visible as translucent dots, hence the botanical name "peforatum". The bright yellow flowers have numerous stamens and are dotted with small dark-coloured glands.
Origin: Europe and Asia; naturalised (e.g. North America, Australia). Selected strains are cultivated.
Uses and Properties: Used for healing since ancient times but today mainly for treating mild depression, mood disturbances, anxiety and nervous conditions. It is popular to treat wounds and burns; inflammations of stomach and intestines; against internal worms.
Active Ingredients:Hypericum is rich in phenolic compounds and various terpenoids but the chemical constituents of special interest are hyperforin (a phloroglucinol derivative) and hypericin (a dianthrone). The latter occurs with smaller quantities of pseudohypericin, protohypericin and others, and gives the red colour to the isolated oil.
Pharmacological Effects: Both hypericin and hyperforin are apparently responsible for a calming and mild antidepressant effect (supported by clinical studies). Whereas a MAO inhibiting activity was considered formerly, today an inhibition of neurotransmitter re-uptake provides a more plausible hypothesis. Hypericin is a photodynamic sensitiser and may cause phototoxic effects in fair-skinned people (but only at very high doses and in the presence of sunlight). Experiments have also shown anti-viral effects, of which a suppression of the HIV-1 virus created considerable interest. Hyperforin is related to the antimicrobial compounds in hops and likewise shows antibacterial effects (important for wound-healing).
Status: Pharm.; Comm. E+; ESCOP 1; WHO 2; clinical studies+.
Preparation and Dosage: Dry herb is sometimes used (daily dose 2-4 g; by infusion three times per day), but more often extracts. To be effective, they should contain 0.1 - 0.3% hypericin and 1 - 6% hyperforin. Hypericum oil, which is made by macerating fresh flowers in wheatgerm oil or olive oil, is traditionally ssed on wounds and burns.
