The roots of this herb native to Asia are considered to be one of the most important herbs within TCM, where it is considered a yang tonic. Since the highly prized roots look like a person, it is used as a tonic for the whole body, mind and spirit.
Asian ginseng is considered to be one of the most important adaptogenic herbs, and is used to relieve both physical and mental fatigue as well as to increase endurance and performance during exercise. The way in which it does this is complex, with some of the ginsenosides stimulating and strengthening the adrenal glands that are essential in coping with stress.
Ginseng is also considered by many to be important in strengthening the immune system in cases of inadequate resistance to infection, in aiding in convalescence, in helping in cases of mild problems with blood sugar and in treating emotional problems.
While these indications are supported by folkloric and traditional evidence, science based research is not so definite. Even though many books refer to trials conducted in the former Soviet Union and China that investigated Asian ginseng's effectiveness in relieving stress and enhancing stamina, we now know that most of these trials were poorly designed. A recent survey of a number of the clinical trials studying Asian ginseng failed to find enough evidence to support its use in any specific condition. This does not mean Asian ginseng does not work, but it does show we need to do a lot more research.
