BayberryBayberry
Astringent herb used for sore throats, inflammtion, fever, sinuses, blood flow, colitis and more.

The root bark of bayberry is the primary medicinal part of the plant. Bark from the stems may also be used, as well as the berries. Bayberry is highly astringent and works on the mucous membranes, especially those of the stomach, intestinal tract, and sinuses. It also acts as a stimulant, increasing blood flow to the mucous membranes. These qualities make it useful in such conditions as sore throat or bleeding gums, where bayberry works to tone tissues and reduce swelling. It is also helpful in chronic sinus infections or inflammations where it will reduce swelling of the membranes and help cut down on discharge. Taken at the first signs of a cold, bayberry can act as a diaphoretic and help reduce fever as well as relieve symptoms.

Because of its action in the intestinal tract, bayberry can be used in cases of stomach or intestinal ulceration. It increases circulation to the area while acting to tone tissues involved. Bayberry is a specific remedy for colitis.
