Used for the liver, fatigue, fever, insomnia, asthma and more.
Vervain has a range of medicinal properties that make it useful for a variety of complaints. The herb is known as a nervine, or nerve tonic, and it is sedative and antispasmodic. These attributes make it useful in anxiety and nervousness, where it acts to soothe and relax the nervous system. It is also helpful in insomnia and in the upset stomach that accompanies anxiety in some people. Blue vervain is especially useful for children who are restless when ill, but have a hard time settling down to recuperate.
Blue vervain is also diaphoretic and will help reduce a fever by producing a sweat. Combined with its other properties, the diaphoretic action makes vervain a helpful adjunct to therapies for children (or adults) who are coming down with a cold or flu. It can help reduce fever and at the same time work to relax and soothe nerves, thereby promoting the rest needed for the recovery process.

I know that folk legend says that vervain will keep vampires away. But as a nervine, will it also keep depression away?

Nervine relaxants like vervain can help in the short term. Vervain acts on the nerves, much like a sedative, to calm a person down. Vervain strengthens the nerves. Vervain can relieve anxiety, tension and stress, and lift a person out of mild depression.
If you suffer from severe or chronic depression, please seek professional help. You are important to us!
