Aromatic herb used for relaxation, insomnia, anxiety, cold sores, digestion and more.
Like most members of the mint family, lemon balm is aromatic, its name derived from its distinctive citrus aroma. The leaves of this plant have long been prized for their soothing and relaxing properties, taken as a tea or added to a hot bath. In the minds of many herbalists, its gentle and calming properties make it well suited to a number of childhood conditions.
While limited, there is some scientific evidence to support the use of lemon balm to treat insomnia, anxiety and situations resulting from nervous tension, including digestive upset. In addition, application of a cream containing lemon balm has been shown to be better than a placebo in treating cold sores.
