As with most members of the rose family, this stout perennial has a wonderful fragrance. Meadowsweet was one of the first plants from which salicylic acid was extracted. In fact, the word aspirin means "from spirea," as the old Latin name for this plant is Spiraea ulmaria.
Meadowsweet is considered by herbalists to be one of the primary digestive herbs, and is used to treat hyperacidity indigestion and even peptic ulcer disease. Since it also contains salicylic acid, a known anti-inflammatory, it is also used to treat pain and arthritic conditions. | | | | | | | |
