Motherwort has two primary traditional uses. The first is indicated by its common name, "motherwort," referring to its use by women. The plant contains compounds that make it antispasmodic, emmenagogue, and sedative. These properties aid in relaxing smooth muscles and in regulating menstrual flow. The tea or tincture can be used in delayed menstruation and in PMS associated with anxiety, tension, and irregularity of flow. Motherwort can also be helpful as a tonic in menopause where cycles are becoming irregular and anxiety and irritability are factors. Motherwort can be especially helpful when menstrual irregularity is accompanied by heart palpitations or flutters of nervous origin.
Motherwort's Latin name, Leonurus cardiaca, indicates its other primary use. Cardiaca refers to the heart, and motherwort has been used traditionally as a heart tonic, where it works to strengthen and normalize heart action. It is mild and nontoxic. It is also helpful in palpitations that stem from nervousness and anxiety.
