Marshmallow, a perennial plant found throughout the world, produces characteristic pale pink flowers. The root is the part most often used medicinally, and was once used to make a candy to help digestion.
As a demulcent herb, marshmallow is used to treat conditions in which mucous membranes are inflamed in the digestive tract, for conditions such as gastritis and peptic ulcer disease; in the lungs for coughs; or in the genito-urinary tract, for conditions such as cystitis. While the soothing action of marshmallow has been proved in animals, there is little scientific evidence that supports the medicinal use of this herbal medicine.
