Marshmallow, a perennial plant found throughout the world, produces characteristic pale pink flowers. The root is the part most often used medicinally, and was once used to make a candy to help digestion.
As a demulcent herb, marshmallow is used to treat conditions in which mucous membranes are inflamed in the digestive tract, for conditions such as gastritis and peptic ulcer disease; in the lungs for coughs; or in the genito-urinary tract, for conditions such as cystitis.
