Description: Hyssop is an erect perennial herb of up to 0.6 m in height, with square stems, small oblong leaves and attractive, deep blue flowers arranged in oblong, terminal clusters. Cultivars with pale blue, violet, pink or white flowers flowers are sometimes encountered.

Origin: Southern and southeastern Europe. The plant is commonly cultivated in herb gardens. The biblical hyssop (referred to at the Crucifixion, for example) is Origanum syriacum, a species from the Middle East.

Parts Used: Fresh or dried aboveground parts, collected during flowering (hyssop herb - Hyssopi herba), or the essential oil obtained by steam distillation (hyssop oil - Hyssopi aetharoleum).

Therapeutic Category: Expectorant, antiseptic, stimulant.

Active Ingredients: Hyssop is rich in flavonoids (e.g. 6-9% diosmin) and phenolic acids (including rosmarlriic acid), diterpenoid lactones (marrubiin) and triterpenoids (oleanolic acid). The essential oil (up to 1% of dry weight) contains two ketones (pinocamphone and isopinocamphone) as main constituents.

Health Effects: Expectorant properties are linked to the presence of marrubiin, while the antiseptic, spasmolytic and stimulant effects are ascribed to the essential oil. Pinocamphone and isopinocamphone are neurotoxic and thus similar to thujone. They are thought to inhibit cell respiration, resulting in spasms and epileptic fits at toxic doses. The essential oil should not be taken internally except in dilute form.

Notes: Hyssop is popular as a culinary herb that is added in small quantities to salads, soups, sauces and meat dishes. It is thought to aid digestion, especially when eaten with oily foods.

Status: Traditional health.

The most common uses of hyssop in traditional herbalism have been to help support chest congestion and coughs, to help soothe sore throats, and to act as a mild sedative. Some herbalists consider it stronger for helping support gas or intestinal cramping than for easing a cough. In addition to using hyssop for the above complaints, early 20th century Eclectic physicians (doctors who recommended herbs) in the United States used the herb topically to soothe burned skin.

Due to the presence of volatile oil constituents in hyssop, it may provide support for mild irritations of the upper respiratory tract that accompany the common cold. The expectorant action of hyssop's volatile oil may partially explain its traditional use for coughs, asthma, and coughs. The volatile oils are also thought to contribute to hyssop's carminative actions and use for mild cramping and discomfort in the digestive tract. The German Commission E has not approved hyssop for any medical indication. Test tube studies have found that certain fractions of hyssop (one being a polysaccharide designated as MAR-10) may support immunity levels.Yet, there have been no studies in humans to determine whether hyssop or any of its constituents may be useful in supporting immunity deficiencies.

Used externally, it is a resolvent particularly for ecchymosis of the eyelids and the eye, by applying a sachet of Hyssop that has been crushed and boiled in water. In Britain the giant hyssops, as Agastache is sometimes known, are uncommon. In North herb gardens they are expected members, and rightly so. All are tall ornamental labiates, rather like their close cousins, the bergamots; but instead of the bergamots distinctly whoried habit of flowering, the agastaches have showy terminal spikes.

The subject of this entry is the most typical and most valuable, as its range of descriptive common names indicates: anise hyssop, blue giant hyssop, fennel hyssop, fragrant giant hyssop. This is a fine, perfectly hardy plant making a strong 3-foot high clump, at its best in late summer. It revels in rich soil. Bees love its flowers and the pale-backed leaves, fresh or dried, are used for flavouring and to make a refreshing tea. Like borage they can be added to summer fruit cups. Surprisingly, neither it nor the similar A. scrophulariifolia are mentioned in the literature of Shaker herbs.

Further species, good for herb garden decorative effect, are native to the southern States and Mexico and thus are less hardy. However, with good drainage in a sunny spot A. cana (the mosquito plant) which is a two-footer with pink flowers and A. mexicana, scarlet, should survive most winters. The first of these is also known as Cedronella cana indicating its resemblance to the plant to which the genus Cedronella really belongs - this is Cedronella canariensis, a monospecific genus, native, as its name suggests, to the Canary Islands and Madeira.

Canary balm (or balm of Gilead, a title attached to several plants) is a wide spreading subshrub up to 5 feet high. The trifoliate hairy leaves, intensely aromatic with a lemony fragrance, are topped by spikes of pink to blue flowers in mid-summer. Canary balm grows well in light soil at the Chelsea Physic Garden but in the numerous less favoured gardens it would be wise to overwinter rooted cuttings as one would any frost-sensitive exotic used for summer bedding.

Growing Tips

The plant, a sub-shrub, enjoys a dry, well-drained soil, and a sunny position. It can be grown from seed planted in spring, from root divisions, or from tip cuttings taken before flowering. The shrub needs protection in severe winters, and may need replacing every five years or so.
