The plant, taken before meals, will stimulate the flow of digestive juices, readying the body to digest and assimilate food eaten. Gentian stimulates the flow of saliva, bile, and gastric juices and thus aids in emptying the stomach. Gentian is especially useful with a heavy evening meal to aid in the digestive process when there is no chance for exercises afterward, or to relieve heartburn in cases where the digestive processes are weak.
Gentian has been used traditionally for poor appetite and chronic indigestion and flatulence. It is also good for short-term use in anorexia, following illness, or in the aged.
