 | | | | | | | | | Skullcap | | | | | | | | | | | | | Relaxing herb used for nervous tension, exhaustion, muscle spasms and more.
This plant, native to North America, is easy to recognize because of its pairs of red and blue flowers. The above-ground parts of this plant have long been used as a relaxing herb, and one of its more dramatic names, mad dog skullcap, comes from the fact that it was thought to cure rabies.
Skullcap is traditionally used for its calming properties in cases of nervous tension, exhaustion, muscle spasms and even mild hysteria. While there is some scientific evidence showing that one of its cousins, Chinese skullcap or Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, has medicinal actions, little or no research exists for European scullcap. | | | | | | | |
