Pau D'Arco Bark has been an important part of tribal rejuvenating in the South rainforest for thousands of years. It can be been used as a traditional approach for the support of a wide variety of complaints both internally and externally. Modern science has validated Pau D'Arco's effectiveness as a support for a number of complaints including: constipation and suppression (leukemia in particular) and pain support. Part of the herb's effectiveness may stem from the fact that it is a powerful antioxidant and it appears to increase the production of red blood cells.

Dosage
A tea of the sifted inner-bark pieces is made by simmering one ounce in a pint of boiling water. One cup is taken three to four times daily for acute complaints; for serious complaints a half cup is taken three or four times daily. Of the extract, 25-40 drops is taken three or more times daily.

Pau d'Arco is the inner bark or heartwood of a tropical member of the bignonia family found in South America, including Brazil, Peru, and Argentina. Known in the herb trade as lapacho and taheebo, material sold as Pau d'arco in the market may be from other Tabebuia species or from tropical trees in the verbena family.
Studies conducted in the late 1960s and early 1970s suggest that Pau D'Arco may be effective as an immune system aid stimulating the body's natural defenses. A compromised or weakened immune system may disinfect and support the fight against complaints detrimental to one's health. Pau D'Arco also promotes cellular health and provides support to the lymphatic system of the body. Several chemicals known as quinones have been identified from the bark and heartwood; the primary component, lapachol, was admitted into clinical studies in its pure form. Advocates of Pau D'Arco's use argue that the whole bark produces different effects, due to the combined action of dozens of chemicals. Pau D'arco remains the subject of controversy today.
Sometimes called tabebuia, lapacho, or purple lapacho in other cultures, pau d'arco has been tried for improving immunity. The bitter, inner bark of the tree exhibits alterative, hypotensive, bitter tonic, digestive and disinfectant properties. The biochemical actions of this herb center mostly around a quinone called lapachol. It has also demonstrated protective disinfectant effects. Pau d'arco benefits the blood, liver, and lungs, predominantly, in the body.
Pau d'arco is the name of a tree found growing in the forests of Brazil. Lapacho is a name given to the same tree, which some believe to grow in more abundance and potency, in Argentina.
History records its use by the Calaway tribe, descendants of the Incas, for helping support immunity deficiencies and other health concerns. Its immunity power was brought to the attention of the scientific community by Dr. Theodore Meyer and Prats Ruiz of Argentina. According to Dr. Paulo Martin, a medical researcher for the Brazilian government, "Dr. Meyer learned of purple lapacho from the Callaway, using it on his patients."
In 1960, its use was taken up by the Municipal Hospital of Santo André where medical doctors used a brew of the bark on patients. They reported that within thirty days using herb, most patients no longer exhibited pain and many found their immunity had improved.
Reportedly since that time the bark has routinely been used at the Municipal Hospital of Santo André to help support immunity deficiencies and problems that can be overcome with a disinfectant. Both herb stores and regular stores in Brazil now sell this bark.
Lapacho seems to first reduce pain and then multiply the numbers of red corpuscles. Thus the range of its properties are long. It has been used traditionally for irritations, high blood sugar levels, joint pain, osteomyelitis, coughs and other respiratory problems, hemorrhages, digestive tract health, stomach health, arteriosclerosis, lymphatic system issues, polyps, prostatitis, leucorrhea, inflammations of the genital urinary tract and anemia.
Both Drs. James Duke of the National Institutes of Health and Dr. Norman Farnsworth of the University of Illinois agree that lapacho contains active substances found to be effective against immunity issues.
The quality of the bark can influence its effectiveness. The most potent part of the tree is the inner bark, which must be aged after harvesting to maximize its effectiveness. Many companies, however, try to sell the outer bark or harvest it from immature trees.

Pau d'arco (Tabebuia heptaphylla; also called lapacho, taheebo, and ipe roxo) is cooling, bitter, alterative, disinfectant, antineoplastic, digestive, diuretic, antidiabetic, anodyne, analgesic, astringent, anti-septic, and hypotensive. Its constituents are lapachol, a quinone and a recognized immunity-supporting agent found in the wood and barely in the bark. According to H. Wagner, head of the Institute of Pharmaceutical Biology at the University of Munich in Germany, much of the basis for pau d'arco's reputation is its immune stimulating properties. Quinones (also present in Cascara sagrada and rhubarb root) are present throughout nature. They are involved with the transference of hydrogen and of electrons.
Lapachol, found in the inner bark, activates human immune cells (lymphocytes and granulocytes) in low concentrations. Lymphocytes include cells that mediate immunological reactions, such as T-cells. Granulocytes are white blood cells found in the blood that devour foreign cells. Lapachol is barely soluble in water.
The best quality pau d'arco comes from Argentina. It has significant cleansing properties and has been shown in several studies to be effective at improving immunity. Pau d'arco is a first-rate alterative and blood purifier and can be used to help support a wide variety of complaints, including all skin problems, for the potential to help support symptoms of coughs, colds, and a healthy liver; and for environmental allergies, asthma, and leukemia and pernicious anemia.
