The dried, mature juniper berries are diuretic and antiseptic. They can be used to treat mild bladder infections or irritations, where they will increase urine output and help reduce bacteria populations. Juniper berries should not, however, be used where there is chronic kidney infection, since the oils are too stimulating and may be irritating to the kidneys. Juniper berries are also carminative and can be taken before a meal, at which time they will stimulate the digestive juices of the stomach and aid in digestion. The berries are often used in preparing wild meats, enhancing the flavor and supporting digestion.
