Guggul is a small aromatic tree that grows naturally throughout India and Western Asia. The part used medicinally is the gum-like resin the plant makes when damaged.
Guggul is historically used as a gargle or mouthwash, but most recent interest has been focused on its use in treating high cholesterol. Scientific evidence from both animal and human studies show that guggulipids can decrease LDL, or harmful cholesterol. It appears to do this by increasing the breakdown of this cholesterol by the liver. | | | | | | | |
