Astragalus is a herbaceous perennial that grows up to 1 m in height. It is native to northern China and Tibet, growing both in grassland and in lightly forested areas that are well drained. The part of the plant used medicinally is the root, which is harvestedfrom plants that are 4-7 years old.
Astragalus is used in TCM as a qi tonic, to strengthen the body's resistance to disease and for ailments due to stress, fatigue and viral infections. New evidence suggests that astragalus may be used to decrease the unpleasant effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatment used in cancer. | | | | | | | |
