Powerful antioxidant used for liver conditions, breastfeeding support and more.
This plant is native to Europe and has a thistle-like appearance. While at one time the whole plant was used medicinally, most attention has recently been focused on the seeds. It gets its name from its use to promote production of milk in breastfeeding women.
Milk thistle extracts are considered to be one of the most important herbs to support liver function. Extracts of this herb have been shown to have powerful antioxidant properties as well as the ability to protect liver cells against environmental toxins. A growing amount of research supports the use of silymarin in treating a number of liver disorders (including hepatitis and cirrhosis) as well as for protecting against the effects of certain drugs, such as acetaminophen and alcohol.
