The root of this fragrant plant has long been used in TCM as a tonic for the blood. While unrelated to ginseng, it is often referred to as female ginseng, since it is used mainly in women's health care.
Within Traditional Chinese Medicine, dong quai is usually used with other plants to treat problems of blood deficiency such as menopause, menstrual cramps and heart conditions, and as a painkiller.
