Used for dementia, Alzheimer's, memory, tinnitus, blood flow and more.
Ginkgo is thought to be one of the oldest species of tree in the world, having been around for almost 200 million years. While native to parts of Asia, ginkgo can now be found in North American cities, as it can survive in extremes of temperature and in city pollution. While the smelly fruits are the parts used by practitioners of TCM, the fan-shaped leaves are the parts used in Western medicine.
Ginkgo biloba extracts (GBE) are probably the most heavily researched herbal medicine in the world. Evidence from good quality controlled clinical trials show it to be effective in slowing the progression of certain types of dementia such as Alzheimer's, in treating tinnitus or ringing in the ear, in treating a disease called intermittent claudication that can cause difficulty walking and in cases where there is poor blood flow to the brain or cerebral insufficiency.
While the results are less conclusive, GBE may also be helpful in treating impotence, Raynaud's syndrome and vertigo.
If your memory is already good, there is little evidence that this herbal medicine will improve it.
