It is leak proof (on the outside) and liquid will remain warm for a couple of hours. However, liquid will seep inside the inner layer (where the plastic and the steel meet inside the mug) when you drink. The will stay in there and get stagnant (will smell like garbage water) no amount of cleaning the mug will fix this. Pretty gross...
