Description

The middle-note scent of black pepper oil is spicy, peppery, musky, and warm with herbaceous undertones. It has an odor intensity of about three out of five. Blending companions include lavender, frankincense, rosemary, florals, woods, and spices. Black pepper oil is warming and digestive, acting as a circulatory stimulant; it is also an antispasmodic and an antiseptic. For emotional well-being, the oil is used to develop mental alertness and enhance stamina for mentally and emotionally draining situations; it is often used to remove energy blockages and boost courage or to promote mental and emotional drive. Black pepper is the unripe peppercorn; white pepper is the ripe fruit with the outer pericarp removed.

Description and Distribution

Black pepper is a perennial vine reaching a height of 20 feet or more (5 m). The small white flowers are followed by red berries which become black when mature. The Pepper used in medicine is that produced by the Piper nigrum. It contains resin, a volatile essence, an acrid oil, a coloring matter, starch, cellulose, albumin, malic acid, tartaric acid, mineral salts, a crystallizable principle and piperine.

Applied to the skin, pepper produces rubefaction and even vesication and has a similar effect on the stomach and intestinal glands. An injection gives a feeling of warmth, increases the appetite and fortifies the digestive system. It is sometimes associated with cinnamon in cures for migraine. It seems also to have anti-blennorrhagic properties.

If ever there has been a cure-all remedy in popular medicine, it is the dried berry of the pepper tree (Piper nigrum), native to the eastern tropics. It is the oldest trade item from the Orient. It has been used not only as a cure for everything from toothache to catalepsy, but also as a preventive drug for bloody dysentery, scarlet fever, smallpox, leprosy, typhus, cholera and the bubonic plague or the Black Death.

General Herb Information
*Note: Bianca Rosa® Black Pepper Pure Essential is not to be taken internally.

Pepper
Piper nigrum L.

Family: Piperaceae.

Other Names: Poivre (French); Pfeffer (German); pepe (Italian); pimienta (Spanish).

Description: An evergreen perennial climber (up to 5 m) with bright green, heart-shaped leaves. It bears clusters of small flowers and small spherical fruits that turn red when they ripen. Several other Piper species are medicinally interesting. The leaves of betel vine (P. betle) of Indo-Malaysia are wrapped around betel palm nuts (Areca catechu) to make a traditional stimulant masticatory. Cubebs or Java pepper represents the fruits of P. cubeba of Indonesia, a digestive medicine and expectorant. It contains antiseptic volatile oil that is used in aromatherapy. Leaves of matico (P. angustifolium = P. elongatum) of South America are used as diuretic, urinary tract disinfectant, anti-diarrhoeal, and externally for skin complaints and haemorrhoids. See also kava (P. methysticum).

Origin: Southern India (Malabar coast - used as a spice since antiquity). Pepper is now cultivated in most tropical parts of the world.

Parts Used: Fruits ("peppercorns"). Green pepper is the whole fresh berry; frozen or preserved. White pepper is the fully mature fruits from which the outer fleshy layers had been removed before drying (Piper albi fructus). Black pepper is the almost mature, complete berries, dried and separated from their stalks (Piper nigri fructus).

Therapeutic Category: Digestive.

Uses and Properties: Black pepper is an import item in Ayurvedic medicine. It stimulates the digestive system and may be used against nausea, dyspeptic complaints and lack of appetite. The essential oil is used topically to treat toothache, rheumatic pains and ectoparasites.

Preparation and Dosage: Internally: 0.3 - 0.6 g; maximally 1.5 g per day.

Active Ingredients: Pepper contains an essential oil (up to 3.5%) and 5-10% pungent acid-amides (pseudoalkaloids), with piperine as main compound and several others (e.g. piperyline, piperoleines and piperamine). The sharp smell is due to essential oil which contains mainly sabinene, pinene, phellandrene, linalool and limonene. Long pepper (P. longum) has similar constituents.

Pharmacological Effects: Piperine has known CNS depressant and anticonvulsive effects. Pepper is antimicrobial and can stimulate both the digestive system (cholagogue) and the circulatory system. Piperine shows insecticidal properties.

Status: Traditional medicine.
