Description
Arnica flower has a long history of use in central Europe as a remedy for bruises and sprains. Arnica was also once popular in folk medicine for angina pectoris. It is still used in Germany for heart conditions, although it is extremely toxic and its internal use is restricted in many countries, including the UK.

Arnica plant can be used externally in creams and ointments for a wide range of injuries - such as strains and bruises - and inflammations like chilblains or painful varicose veins. Because of its toxicity, arnica should never be used on broken skin. Arnica encourages circulation to promote healing and tissue repair while recent studies suggest that it may have immune-stimulant properties.

As an internal remedy, arnica is most often used in homoeopathic doses for shock, traumatic injury and to encourage healing after surgery. Homoeopathic medicines are stronger at higher dilutions: Arnica 6X tablets are readily available from health-food shops and chemists, while Arnica 30X is more likely to be found at a specialist supplier.

Precautions / Contraindications
Arnica should not be used on open wounds and can cause contact dermatitis. It should only be used externally: taken internally it can lead to palpitations, muscle paralysis and breathing problems. Significant side effects have been reported for doses of around 30 ml of a 1:5 tincture (in the UK only 1:10 tinctures of arnica are permitted) and in rare cases it may be fatal.
