• Traditionally used to help support a healthy liver, enlarged liver or spleen, chemical liver damage, liver congestion, melancholy, irregular menstruation and much more.
The bitter-tasting root of bupleurum has confirmed antipyretic, alterative, and analgesic (for head and chest pain) properties. The systems of the body most supported by this herb include the liver, gallbladder, and pericardium.

Bupleurum is regarded as one of the finest herbs for detoxifying the liver. It ranges from Northern China and Asia to Europe, where it is called "Thorough Wax." It is prescribed as an antipyretic, analgesic, antinauseant, and to counteract anxiety, dizziness, and to strengthen the eyes and limbs. It seems to be especially good for toning up the leg muscles.

Therapeutic Dosage: 3-5 grams.

Bupleurum is also known as Hare's Ear. Bupleurum Root is one of the most important herbs used in Chinese herbalism. The Chinese name for Bupleurum, chai hu, means "kindling of the barbarians." The part of this plant used for health benefits is the root, which is dug up in Spring or Autumn, dried in the sun, and then cut into short pieces. Bupleurum is not a tonic herb, but it can be useful in the tonic system because of its potential ability to help support liver tension and digestive disturbances, and because its actions are detoxifying.

Bupleurum has the ability to clear "stagnation" virtually anywhere in the body. It can be used to help support spasms, muscle tension, lumps, and bleeding due to menstrual irregularity. An essential oil in Bupleurum is responsible for its ability to help support surface heat. This herb is anti-inflammatory, hepato-protective, a mild sedative, antipyretic (reduces fever), analgesic, adaptogen, and anti-tussive.

The primary chemical constituents of Bupleurum Root include fatty acids, glycosides, oleic acid, palmitic acid, quercetin, and narcissin. This herb also contains constituents known as saikosaponins that appear to account for much of the positive health activity of the plant. Bupleurum Root is a primary herb in dozens of classical formulations which serve a wide variety of harmonizing activities, all of which regulate body energy, help support blockages in the body, and discharges the toxins safely out of the system. As time goes by, these Bupleurum-based formulas typically become less and less necessary, until eventually they only need to be used occasionally, if at all. It can be used for helping support the common cold that is accompanied by alternating symptoms of chills and fever, chest pain, prolapse of internal organs and irregular menstruation. It is also supportive for women with menstrual problems associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Regarding its effective liver cleansing capabilities, one of its most important activities is to continually reduce impurities and waste matter from the system - Bupleurum has a unique reputation for deeply cleansing this overburdened organ.

Bupleurum root is traditionally used as a digestive aid and the common cold (to help support the associated fever, inflammation and pain). It can also be used specifically to help support liver ailments and amenorrhoea. It appears to protect the liver and is believed to create balance between various organs in the body.

Bupleurum
Bupleurum falcatum L. (= B. chinense DC., = B. scorzonerifolium WilId.).

Family: Apiaceae.

Other Names: Sickle-leaved hare's ear; Chinese thorowax, thai hu, saiko (Chinese); buplèvre en faux (French); Sichelblättriges Hasenohr, Chinesisches Hasenohr (German).

Description: This is a perennial herb of up to 1 m in height, with simple lance-shaped leaves and small flowers arranged in umbels, followed by small, dry fruits of about 4 mm long. The plant is somewhat woody at the base and arises from a permanent, branching rhizome. Bupleurum chinense and B. scorzonerifolium are no longer considered to be distinct from B. falcatum.

Origin: Northern Asia, northern China and Europe.

Parts Used: Dried roots (Chinese Bupleuri radix).

Therapeutic Category: Tonic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic.

Active Ingredients: The major compounds are triterpenoid saponins ("saikosides"), including saikosaponins A-F and and saikogenins A-G. Also present are fatty acids, polyacetylenic compounds and polysaccharides.

Health Effects: The health value of the plant is ascribed mainly to the saponins. Saikogenin A and saikosaponin A have been used in various studies showing analgesic, antipyretic and sedative effects. Some evidence also exists for anti-irritation and hepatoprotectant activity. The saikosaponins are considered to be responsible for the anti-inflammatory effects. Immune regulation effects are ascribed to a biologically active polysaccharide known as bupleuran 2IIb, which enhances the binding of immune-complexes to macrophages, and also to saikosaponin D, which is thought to modify T lymphocyte function. Most of the traditional uses of Bupleurum have been studied but no formal clinical trials seem to have been done. Antipyretic (fever-reducing) effects were shown in patients with fever caused by the common cold, cold-like symptoms, malaria and pneumonia.

Status: Traditional health; WHO 1.

Preparation and Dosage: Decoctions of about 3 - 9 g of the roots are taken three times a day.

Bupleurum (Bupleurum falcatum) contains saikosaponins that have anti-inflammatory properties .

It is a primary ingredient in a number of herbal formulas whose action involves liver detoxification. It has the ability to help improve immunity by inducing apoptosis (slow death of errant cells) and inhibiting angiogenesis (blocking vascularization). It can be used to help support breast, liver, and colon health issues and it has been found to increase the effectiveness of the chemotherapeutic agent 5-fluorouracil (5-FU).
