• Traditionally used to help support candida, diarrhea, fatigue, fever, flatulence joint pain and much more.
Prickly Ash is also known by the names Toothache Tree, Yellow Wood, Northern Prickly Ash, Tumburu, and Hua Jiao. Prickly Ash is native to North America. The bark, and sometimes the berries, of these trees are used for health. There are many other trees in this genus that grow on other continents, including Chinese Prickly Ash (Zanthoxylum bungeanum), which grows in Asia. The genus name Zanthoxylum is derived from the Greek "zanthos" and "xylum," meaning "yellow wood."
Many eastern Native tribes valued Prickly Ash Bark as a supportive for upset stomach, sore throats, aching muscles, skin infections, to stimulate saliva flow, and various other complaints. Eclectic physicians in the United States at the end of the 19th century continued the traditional uses of Prickly Ash Bark, primarily as a digestive aid, to strengthen the nervous system, and for cholera. The bark was also widely used by herbalists to help support rheumatic complaints.
The primary chemical constituents of Prickly Ash Bark include essential oils, fat, sugar, gum, alkaloids (fagarine, magnoflorine, laurifoline, nitidine, chelerythrine), tannin, lignan (asarin), coumarins, and phenol (xanthoxylin). It has a stimulating effect upon the entire body, including the lymphatic system and mucus membranes. Prickly Ash Bark stimulates sluggish digestion and helps destroy toxins and yeast overgrowth. It is considered to be as strong a stimulant as Cayenne Pepper, but is slower acting and longer lasting. Due to its stimulating effect on the lymphatic system, circulation and mucous membranes, this herb has a role in the holistic support for many specific complaints, a few of which have included joint pain, Candida, chilblains, diarrhea, fatigue, fever, flatulence lumbago, Raynaud's phenomenon, joint pain, sore throat, and varicose veins. Known topical applications of this herb have included use as a poultice for toothaches, pelvic disorders, wounds, back pain & joint pain, and a lotion for poor circulation, and as a massage oil for joint pain.
The plant stems have even been used as a toothbrush. The common name Prickly Ash includes the species Zanthoxylum clava-herculis (Southern Prickly Ash) and Zanthoxylum fraxineum, which are used interchangeably with Zanthoxylum americanum.
Also known as the toothache tree, prickly ash produces bark and berries that are beneficial to the blood and lymphatic circulation, the spleen, the stomach, and the kidneys. With stimulant, alternative, diaphoretic, carminative, antidiarrheal, antipyretic, emmenagogue, and rubefacient properties, prickly ash can be used to help support sluggish circulation, joint pain, and toothache and gum health. Prickly ash bark contains alkaloids, fagarine, coumarins, resin, tannin and volatile oil.
A stimulant of blood and lymphatic circulation, prickly ash can be used to help support joint pain complaints, lethargy and wounds that are slow to mend. In addition, it is also a blood purifier and useful for the potential to help support symptoms of symptoms of skin problems and accumulations in the joints.
Prickly ash is very warming to the stomach and is thus useful for weak digestion, colic and cramps.
Externally it can be applied as a poultice or fomentation to help dry and mend wounds. The powder of the bark can be chewed or brushed on the gums to help support toothache, and to help support pyorrhea receding gums.
A good combination for helping support joint pain is equal parts prickly ash bark, guiacum, sarsaparilla, black cohosh and sassafras. This is made into a tea using an ounce of the combination to a pint of water. Three cups are taken daily. Positive results are usually evident within the first two weeks; for longer-term results one may have to take it for two to three months or more.
For pyorrhea and receding gums make a tooth powder using varying amounts prickly ash bark, bayberry bark, finely powdered myrrh, cinnamon and echinacea root. Brush the teeth and gums twice daily with this.
